SCHOOL CADET CORPS
LEAD BY SOUTH ISLAND 49 OF FIRST 50 PLACES IN DOMINION j Secondary school cadet corps in the South Island are hoping this year to maintain the exceptional record set last year when South Island schools gained 49 of the first 50 places in New Zealand. The only North Island school to gain even a place in the first 50ewas 22nd on the list. In the years before 1946 South Islaffd schools did well, in proportion to population, but last year’s result came as a surprise even to niilitary examiners. This year all the schools by now have completed their annual barracks and the opinion is held at Southern Military District Headquarters in Christchurch that the standard shown in these this year was equally as good as that which so outdistanced North Island competitors last year. No official explanation is available for the superiority of South Island schools in cadet work, except that 1947 and 1946 have been the climax of some years of keen competition.
