THEABELLE WINS CHEVIOT CUP

BOSTON LADY IN FORM LITTLE JEAN’S' BIG DIVIDEND Theabelle gave a solid display at the Cheviot Trotting Club’s meeting, which was held on. the Rangiora racecourse on Saturday, to win the Cheviot Cup in the fast time of 4min 26sec from, the fastfinishing Silverlight, which was the unlucky runner’in the race. Silverlight began smoothly from the 12 yards mark, but he appeared to be seriously checked when True Comrade broke in front of him just after the- start, and when be got clear he was giving the leaders at least 48 yards’ start,. Peter’s Pal was the smartest to begin, and with a furlong covered he was leading from Theabelle Abel Tasman, Sandi-' ford, Pencarrow and Volo Lad, with Silverlight about eight lengths away. Another eight lengths behind Silverlight, Athlone Direct was followed by Tony Grattan and Lady Spray. Silverlight gradually made up his handicap, and with three furlongs to go he was following Peter’s Pal, Theabelle, Volo Lad, Abel Tasman, and Sandiford. Once the straight was reached, Thomas challenged Peter’s Pal with Theabelle, and the mare had the race m ’safe keeping with 100 yards to go. Silverlight did well to finish in second place in 4min 25 l-ssec. The favourite, Volo Lad, just shaded Peter’s Pal for third place. A six-year-old daughter of Sandydale and Princess Thea, Theabelle has done well since she began racing last season, to record three wins and eight minor placings. On Saturday’s display, she should win again in her present class. Her dam, Prinoess Thea, Is by Prince Pointer (a son of Logan Pointer) from Princess Thea, which is by Harpld Rotnschild from the ' Bellman mare, Myrtle Bell.

The improving Boston Lady brought her record for the season to two wins and three minor placings when she outclassed her field in the North Canterbury Racing Club’s Handicap, winning without being extended in imin 43sec from a 2min 52sec mark. True Potts and Peter’s Pal began quickly, and at the end of two furlongs they were about six lengths clear of Fulwood, ' Sandiford, Understudy, Pencarrow. and Boston Laay. True Potts stopped quickly after fighting for the lead with Peter’s Pal over the first half-mile, and with four furlongs to go; Peter’s Pal was just clear of Sandiford and Boston Lady. Once tne straight was reached, Tatterson let Boston Lady do her best, and she soon settled the issue. The Grattan Loyal mare has won her last two races in splendid style, and she should take a much tighter

mark before the season closes. Little Jean returned her supporters a win dividend of nearly a third of a century when she won the Bollard Handicap by four lengths from Loyal Toast, whlcn gave a good display after being well back with half a mile to go. Little Jean, whlcn was driven by her owner-trainer, W. J. Allan, broke soon after the start, but once she settled down to trot she quickly made up her lost ground, and with six furlongs covered she was handy to the pace-maker, Olympus. Allan took thp mare into the lead-in the back straight,'

and she sustained a fast run to win in 3min 45 2-ssec. LoyaF Toast, the runnerup, was recently purchased by Mr T. walker from Mr W. J. Moore, and, on this performance, he appeals as an early winner. Large fields necessitated several races being run in divisions, but under the capable direction of the secretary, Mr R. G. Archer, who was assisted by Mr P. Byrne, the programme of 15 races was completed within a few minutes of the scheduled time. Credit is also due to the totalisator staff fos the quick balancing of the machine, and to the starter, Mr- A« J. Hastings, who got his fields away with a minimum of delay. As the times indicate, the track was particularly fast. The attendance was fair, and the totalisator handled £26,763 10s, compared with £31,442 10 last year.
