WAIKARI SPORTS

C. C. GORDON WINS MARATHON

The annual sports meeting of the Waikari Sports Association on Saturday maintained the association’s reputation for holding one cf the best country meetings in Canterbury. The long and varied programme was carried through witlr very little delay, and there was always something to hold the interest of the large crowd of spectators. Gate takings were rather lerwer than the record figure for 1946, but in view of numerous counterattractions this year were considered very satisfactory. Practically all events attracted good fields, but cycling races, both amateur and cash, were outstanding. About 60 riders competed, and heats were necessary even in the longer distance races. Although few outstanding times "were recorded, there were many good finishes in both athletic and cycling events, A highlight of the programme was the finish of the Marathon race, in which the veteran C. C. Gordon, running in his first Marathon, had a popular win. Starting from the limit of 60min. Gordon covered the distance in 3hr 39Jmin. L. E. Fox. wher ran second to G. Bromley in the recent New Zealand championship Marathon, reversed the position on Saturday, and ran second in 2hr 52min, 40 minutes ahead of Bromley, who finished third. Both these men were on scratch. The course, from Culverden to Waikari, via Hawarden, was as level a one as could be found in the district, and much better than that used last year, but the heat of the day and a light north-west wind made the race a hard one, and Fox’s time was considered an excellent performance. In the wood-chopping events, H. G. Gillman, conceding 17 seconds in the 12inch chop and 22 seconds in the 14-inch, won the former and gained second place in the larger chop, and won the Amberley Sawmillers’ Challenge Cup for most points in these events. The Sutherland Challenge Cup for most points in open flat races was won by C. R. Bailey with 8 points, J. King being runner-up with 6 points. The sports opened with a parade of the City of Christchurch Highland Pipe Band, which also gave a quickstep and selections during the afternoon.
