RAILWAY COAL STOCKS
“PERILOUSLY LOW EBB” SUPPLIES DIVERTED FROM GENERAL USE (P.A.) AUCKLAND, March 14. Screened coal • will be withdrawn from general use with the exception of hospitals, in the coming week in an effort to restore railway stocks now at a perilously low ebb. This* was announced by the Mining Controller,‘Mr C. H. Benney. In some depots only a day’s supply was held. It was not likely that complete diversion of supplies to the railways would have to -be maintained for more than a week, said Mr Benney. The distribution of household coal will be the supply most seriously affected as dairy factories and power stations use slack coal. “The railways require as much as they can get,” the Controller said. “It is imperative that sufficient stocks are maintained in the different depots.”
