ROYAL VISIT TO SOUTH AFRICA
Sir, —May I quote from a South African correspondent regarding the visit of the Royal Family: In Paarl, a very nationalistic centre, the nationalist section were so taken up with the personalities of the Royal Family that, on the arrival of the Royal tra *£ and the presentation of the King and Queen and their daughters, they sang spontaneously, along with the others, God Save the King,” a song they have hitherto despised from the bottom of their souls. It just shows that personal influences reach out far aw§y over principles and ideologies, and the psychological insight of General Smuts is really marvellous.
A press cutting enclosed quoted “General” Marsh, leader of the Paarl Ossewa Brandwag, which is an ultranationalist, anti-English, and still proNazi movement: “The Royal Family captured us completely by their gracious simplicity . . . The Royal visit will do much to unite all. the political parties of South Domett, March 14, 1947.
