OBITUARY
MR WILLIAM HILLIARD Mr William Hilliard, of 21 Packe street, St. Albans, died at his home this week in his 100th year. He was a member of a well-known County Kerry family, which operated a bootmaking business in Killarney. He came to New Zealand in 1875, and joined the Police Force, which was then controlled by the Provincial Government. The first suburban police station in Christchurch was opened on Ferry road by Mr Hilliard, who served as a mounted trooper until 1913. From that time he lived in retirement. He was a keen lover of sport, especially fishing and shooting, and he took a great interest in gardening. On three occasions he won the annual prize for the best flower and vegetable garden in Christchurch.
Mr Hilliard celebrated his ninetyninth birthday on November 26 last year. Six of his nine children are still living and he has 32 grandchildren and 27 great grandchildren.
