WELLINGTON MEETING

BRILLIANT WIN BY BRUCE

SAGE KING’S GOOD PERFORMANCE From Our Own Reporter

WELLINGTON, March 8. Another sterling performance by the Wellington Cup winner, Bruce, which made light of his 9-11 and finished brilliantly to win the Autumn Handicap, was a feature of the first day of the Wellington Racing Club’s autumn meeting at Trentham to-day. For his size, he must be one of the best stayers to have raced in the country for many years, while there have certainly been none more courageous. He has now won £7005 this hI L Wynings to date total £11,360. On their return to scale, the crowd accorded both the horse and the r# J" J ’ EU L s ’, a reception fully equal of that given Golden Souvenir when he won the Wellington Racing Club Handicap w'ith 10-0 last January. Bruce has won his three races at Trentham this year almost to a pattern. Today, as in the Dominion Handicap and V} e , Wellington Cup, he was at the rear of the field with half a mile to run, but « e i^ so ? n . worked hi s way through the J*® 10 ’.. i be In ? challenging position at the furlong, and with his usual brilliant finishing run headed the leader, Sakuntala, with half a furlong to run, and went on to win decisively by a length. From a good start. Flying Ace was soon setting the pace from. Dink’s Own, Night Foe, and Royal Victor, followed by Langue d’ 2 r > .Arco, and Carnforth, the.i Bruce and Broiefield. with Sakuntala, which drifted early, and Montosorrie. As they turned into the back straight, Flying Ace increased his lead to six lengths, but down -«l- e furlongs Night Foe closed to within half a length of him, and Sakuntala made a fast move up into third place, followed by Dink’s Own and Carnforth, Langue d Or, Broiefield, Arco, and Bruce. Bruce received a check at this stage when racing between Arco and Broiefield. Round to the straight entrance. Flying Ace and Night Foe just led Sakuntala, followed by Dink s Own and Carnforth, then Langue d’Or, Broiefield, Arco, and ?^ uce L . As they straightened up, Sakuntala shot into the lead and soon had a three lengths break on Night Foe. At the furlong Bruce had worked his way through the field and Langue d’Or was also moving up. Finishing brilliantly, Bruce forged past Sakuntala and won by a length Langue d’Or got up for third, a neck behind Sakuntala, with a similar margin to Night Foe. A length further back came Broiefield, followed by Royal Victor, Arco, and Carqforth in line, and gaps to Dink’s Own, Flying Ace, and Montosorrie.

Another fine performance was that of Sage King, which showed himself to be ® high-class three-year-old by winning the Thompson Handicap, at his first appearance in open company. There was added merit in his performance, as he drew the outer at the barrier and JPvas slow away. He made a quick move up on the outside in the first two furlongs and was in fifth place turning into the straight. He tackled the leader. Voltaic, approaching the last furlong, and finished solidly, to win by half a length. Im- £ erial finished fast into third place. Sage -ing. Big Money, Casilda, and Foxhaven were slow away, Voltaic being smartest out, to lead Treasure Tee, r asda, Opulent, Great Coon, and Gay Stroller. Nearing the half mile, Red Pickle had moved up to join Voltaic, followed by Opulent, Great Coon, Yasda, which was badly checked. Sage King, Gay Stroller, Imperial. Majesty, and Big Money. Except that Yasda lost his position, there was little change to the straight, where Red Pickle began to weaken 100 yards after the field straightened up. Voltaic soon worked clear of Opulent and Great Coon, but Sage King moved through to challenge him at the furlong, with Imperial, becoming prominent, three lengths further back. In a hard finish. Sage King prevailed by half a length, while Imperial finished brilliantly for third place, a similar margin behind Voltajc. Matador came from a Tong way back to get fourth, then came Gay Stroller, Majesty’, and Yasda, with the others well beaten.

The St. Leger Stakes In a slow-run race, Desert Fox outclassed the field in the New Zealand St. Leger Stakes. Fine Flavour set a very slow pace from the outset, the first half being run in 52sec, and there was no real pace on until the five furlongs, when Desert Fox moved up to join Fine Flavour. He soon took the lead as they raced round to the straight, where he soon worked clear, to have a four lengths lead commencing the final furlong. Perfect Peace was the only one to threaten danger in the final stages, but Midwood kept Desert Eox going to win comfortably by two lengths. When the field settled down, Fine Flavour was setting a middling pace from Desert Fox and Rosswood, Indian Dawn and Keening, and Perfect Peace and Portabul, which were racing in pairs. There was no change until near the half-mile, where Desert Fox joined Fine Flavour and the others closed up. Desert Fox led to the straight, with Indian Dawn moving up to take second place as soon as they commenced the run home. Desert Fox drew out at the furlong, where Indian Dawn- was beaten, and Keening and Perfect Peace were finishing on strongly. Desert Fox was not seriously troubled to win by two lengths from Perfect Peace, which finished on strongly in the straight and would have been better suited by a. stronger pace. Keening was another three lengths back, third, *vith a further length to Indian Dawn, which beat Rosswood for fourth place in a photo finish. Then came Fine Flavour, Portabul, the other runner breaking down a furlong and a half from the post. With a brilliant finishing run over the last furlong, an outsider in Karachi got up in the last few strides to win the Railway Handicap by a neck from Specialist, which appeared a likely winner at the furlong post. The winner’s dividend on the win machine was surprisingly short, considering his form this season. From a good start. Flying Orders, Cot Case, White Cap, Colopier, and Specialist, wide out, were the early leaders, with Peter Gazelle and Karachi drifting a little. Down to the course proper, Colopier, Cot Case, and Flying Orders were the pacemakers, from Specialist, Lord Theio, and White Cap, with Peter Gazelle and Karachi at the rear. Specialist moved up to challenge Cot Case in the straight, and at the furlong was holding him off. with Flying Orders next. Specialist looked a winner until 60 yards from the post, where Karachi flashed up on the outer to get the decision, by a neck. Cot Case was half a length back, with a head to Flying Orders, which was coming again. Peter Gazelle was next, then the favourite, Lord Theio, White Cap, and Colopier, with gaps between them. The winner’s time of Imin lOJsec equalled the six furlongs course record held jointly by John Gay and Da Vinci. It was a good indication of the state of the going. Considering that there were no special race trains the attendance at the meeting was very good. The totalisator turnover of £171,975 10s shbwed a decrease of £13,154 on the corresponding day last year, when the turnover was £135,129 10s. Details:— RIMU HIGH-WEIGHT HANDICAP Of £6OO. REVOLTE FINISHES SOLIDLY

NOW OUT OF HACK COMPANY The Riccarton-trained gelding Revolte won his way out of hack company at Trentham on Saturday. He raced right up to his recent form and finished solidly to beat another well backed runner in King’s Ransom by a length, in the Tinakori Handicap. Revolte’s rider, A. Stokes, eased up on him nearing the post, otherwise his winning margin would have been greater. King’s Ransom, Revolte, Flare Path, Broielyn and Theioway were the smartest away but Revolte and King’s Ransom were soon steadied back in the field, Theioway and Ella Shields going through to the front to lead down to the half-mile from Our Jock, King’s Ransom, Revolte, Flare Path, Iron Duke, and Ngakoti. The leaders held their positions round to the straight entrance. King’s Ransom became a little unbalanced and Flare Path received a check. Re volte and King’s Ransom soon worked clear of the others and at the furlong led by three lengths from Ella Shields, P ar e ? ath ’ and N S ak oti. Revolte finished too well for King’s Ransom and won comfortably by a length. Ngakoti finished on to beat Ella Shields by half a length for third, some four lengths behind King’s Ransom. Flare Path was JL lth Br °ielyn and Our Jock heading the others Revolte will not run on the second day and his remaining hack engagements are at the Oamaru meeting. ■ ♦ race an was opened into alleged interference to Flare Path * R ®Y olt e near the furlong post in the straight. After the hearing of evidence the inquiry was adjourned until next Saturday.

Master Peter held off Merger, which made up a tremendous amount of ground m the last half mile, by half a gain secon d place, with Marshall Cook a poor fourth. Village Squire was next, well clear of the rest.

Outsider Wins In a hard struggle over the last furlong, Balcherrie, the outsider of the field, surprised by winning the Silverstream Hack Handicap by half a length from Blue Moon, with Lady Welbeck just failing to get up for second place when Blue Moon weakened in the last few strides from the post. The winner returned the largest dividend of the day. Cock Robin was the early leader from The Saddler, Blue Moon, Omaio, Balcherrie, with Sheilwyn and Lady Welbeck at the rear of the field. Witb seven furlongs to run Cock Robin was six lengths clear of Blue Moon and The Saddler, -but at the half mile the pair had closed to within three-quarters of a length of him, with Balcherrie and Sheilwyn, which had moved up alohg the back, next; Lady Welbeck and Queen’s General were still well back. Sheilwyn moved up to join Blue Moon, which took over the lead approaching the straight, with Balcherrie, Ulatis, and Lady Welbeck next. Sheilwyn soon weakened in the run home and Balcherrie moved up to challenge Blue Moon and gradually wore her down to win by half a length. In the last few yards Lady Welbeck, which came from well back, almost got up for second place, the judge’s margin being half a head. Queen’s General was finishing on in fourth place, with the remainder well beaten.

AUSTRALIAN CUP NARROW WIN FOR SYDNEY JAMES (N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) (Rec. 6.30 p.m.) MELBOURNE, March 9. Sydney James, winner of the last Perth Cup, and Field Balloon, staged a most exciting finish in the Australian Cup. It was not until the judge had called for a thoto finish that he decided in favour of ydney James by half a head. Then the winner had to withstand a protest for interference, which was dismissed after a fairly long hearing. Sydney James bore out In the run home and carried Field Balloon with him. Ellipsis tired in the last furlong, and was five lengths away, third. Sydney James is an aged gelding which was sold very cheaply a few months before the Perth Cup. He was intended for a hunter, but his owners changed their minds with a happy result, and kept him to flat racing. Since then he was won the Perth Cup and the Australian Cup. Field Balloon displayed his best form for some months, but Cherie Marie, Codicil, and Dfama, th* most favoured candidates, performed poorly. Manakau made all the early running, with Leonard, Ellipsis, Field Balloon, and Cherie Marie well placed. A mile from home Manakau led from Leonard, Sydney Field Balloon, Ellipsis, Miss Prim, and Codicil. Manakau led until the home turn where he was passed by Field Balloon, Ellipsis, and Sydney James. At the furlong post there was little between the three leaders. Ellipsis was the first to give ground, and Sydney James and Fiejd Balloon staged a most exciting finish. Spear Patrol was fourth, then Sir Actor, Grampian, and Canada, with Leonard last. Attley scored an all-the-way win in the C. M. Lloyd Stakes, in which. Flight could finish only third. His form to-day showed that Attley is the best miler in Victoria at present. There was a large attendance for the concluding day, the weather being perfect.
