WAYFARER

A BROTHER TO HAUGHTY The Winslow owner-trainer, B. Grice, is represented at the Timaru Trotting Club’s meeting to-day by Wayfarer and Mont Serrat. A well-bred three-year-old colt, Wayfarer is a brother to a fine performer in Haughty and is a half-brother to a winner in Traverse. Already the winner of £13,005 10s in stakes, Haughty, which was foaled in 1935, showed fine form at the Canterbury Park Trotting Club’s meeting on February „8 when, after conceding starts of up to 48 yards to some high-class pacers in the ’ Farewell Handicap, she finished in third place to Sir Michael and Cameronian in the fast time of 2min 36sec for a mile and a quarter. The mare looks particularly well, * and she should race prorfiinently in the free-for-all events at the New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club’s Easter meeting. Grice laid the foundation of this successful family when he purchased an unnamed Prince Imperial mare, which was a sister to Aberfeldy. from the late Mr J. C. McConachie, at Ashburton more than 40 years ago. From this Prince Imperial mare, he bred Logan Princess, which was by Logan Pointer, and, mated with Happy Voyage, she in turn Regal Voyage. Regal Voyage was given away by Grice, and she later developed into a good winner under the guidance of D. Withers, taking a record for two miles of 4min 19 4-ssec. When, she was later submitted for auction, Grice bought her for 140 guineas, and his judgment was vindicated when her mating with Nelson Derby produced Haughty. Wayfarer has been patiently handled by Grice, and the colt’s showing in the second division of the Seadown Handicap will be followed with interest.

Mont Serrat, which secured two third placings in his three starts when racing as a pacer' in the early part of the season, has been converted to the trotting gait by Grice, and he will start from the scratch mark in the Claremont Handicap. A Spur-year-old gelding. Mont Serrat is by Nelson Derby from Queen’s Treasure, the dam of winners in Single Star, Hardy Oak and .Jack’s Treasure. Mont Serrat has something of a private reputation as’a trotter, and he is expected to race well to-day. Jottings Doreano lead practically all the way to win a race at the Ashburton • Trotting Club’s meeting on Tuesday and that form entitles him to serious consideration from the 24 yards mark in the Claremont Handicap at the Timaru Trotting Club’s meeting. Caledonian Gold is one of the favourites for the March Handicap at the Auckland Trotting Club’s meeting to-day. A Gaillard gelding, he has registered three wins and five minor placings in 12 starts this season. Lady Gamble has raced consistently this season for a win and three minor placings, and she should be a place proposition in Salisbury Handicap at Washdyke to-day. Larkhall, which will race in the Timaru Nursery Stakes in the interests of Mr A. McPhee, is trained at Mataura by D. Todd. By Dillon Hall, he is out of Southern Change. Destroyed The four-year-old Sandydaie—Zara Bingen gelding. Niledale, which was owned by Messrs O’Neil Bros., Westport, broke a leg after a' work-out at Westport on Thursday morning, and had to be destroyed. Niledale had been working well, and was one of the favourites for the trotting events at the Westport Jockey Club’s meeting. A half-sister, Nile Lass, which is by Red Worthy, is also owned by the O’Neil Bros., and she will contest the Waimangaroa Trot at Westport today.

Giving Away Time Now assessed on 4min 42sec for two miles, Starshell will be giving away two seconds if she starts in the 4min 40sec class Timaru Trotting Cup at the Timaru Trotting Club’s meeting to-day. This daughter of Sandydaie and Skyglow is nicely placed off the 12 yards mark in the Washdyke Handicap later in the afternoon, and if she is reserved she should go close to winning this race. Back from Perth

1 hl P k . stor W Weather was one of the best horses at the meeting,” said F^ ee MP? 68 ’ w , ho arrived back in Christchurch this week after attending the InterDommion Championships in Perth last month. Bandbox deserved her win in the final, but Stormy Weather would have been hard to beat if a tyre of his sulky had not punctured during the race. Para Derby was also impressive. He was unfortunate in the final, having to travel wide out, and this made his task much harder.

Now 76 years of age, Free Holmes drove Ruling Globe in two races at the meeting, but the 15-year-old pacer was unable to do better •than finish in fourth place While in Australia, Holmes attenaed trotting meetings at Gawler and Wayville. ’Trotting has not made the progress over there that it has done in New Zealand,’ he commented. "The tracks are small, the track at Perth being 88 yards short of half a mile and the track •at Wayville being three furlongs. The stakes generally are small and, except in special events, the main a Programme averages about £ooo. The appointments and grounds are a long way“ behind those provided bv most clubs in New Zealand.” Although he did not see many trotters in action. Holmes was particularly impressed with Election, which is by Peterwah A grand trotter, Peterwah numbered the 1926 Dominion Trotting Handicap amongst his successes in New Zealand. Free Holmes, who looks well after his trip, left on Thursday night to attend the Cromwell Jockey Club’s meeting. Brackets The following horses will be bracketed oh the totalisator at the Timaru Trotting Club’s meeting, which will be held at Washdyke to-day:—Claremont Handicap, Bellisima. Doubtful Starter Task Force wss reported to be sore during the week, and she is a doubtful starter in the March Handicap at the Auckland Trotting Club’s meeting to-day. A seven-year-old mare by Jack Potts from Maplewood, Task Force raced well last season for three wins and 10 minor placings, and it will be unfortunate for her owner, Mr P.. Carmichael, if she is unable to take her place in the field. Seven Bar an Acceptor Selwin Bar instead of Seven Bar was included in the acceptances for the Seadown Handicap at the Timaru Trotting Club’s meeting to-day. Owned by Messrs A. Laing and J. Bisman, and trained by W. R.. Butt, Seven Bar, which will start from the scratch mark, is a four-year-old gelding by Gold Bar from Alone. At Auckland Jackie Boy won the Logan Handicap from Parrish Jewel and Jack Irvine in 4min 30sec at the Auckland Trotting Club’s meeting on February 8. and, on that performance, he should show up at the finish of the Henderson Handicap at the Auckland Trotting Club’s meeting today. Maj’ be Placed The seven teen-year-old Beethoven racedwell at the Marlborough Trotting Club’s meeting on February 1 for a win over Monitress in the Stewards’ Handicap and a fourth placing to Jason’s Quest, Little Jean, and Olympus in the President’s Handicap and. on this form, he should gain a place in the second division of the Claremont Handicap at the Timaru Trotting Club's meeting-.-
