NAVAL DEPTH CHARGES

DISPATCH BY AIR TO WELLINGTON (P.A.) AUCKLAND, Jan. 23. Four depth charges, each containing 6001 b of amatol, which is sufficient to blow the stern off a destroyer, have been dispatched by air to Wellington from the Devonport Naval Base. They are expected to be used in releasing the stranded forepart of the Wanganelia from its firm bed in the reef. The Navy has also supplied primers and fuses, and it is understood that a length of rubber-sheathed firing cable is being obtained in Wellington. Two naval explosives experts, Messrs H. A. Haynes, senior armament supply officer, and R. E. Ansley, Royal New Zealand Navy commissioned tor-pedo-gunner in H.M.N.Z.S. Philomel, have left for Wellington to provide technical, assistance.
