THEFT OF BICYCLE Thomas Mills Stewart, aged 37 years, pleaded guilty to a charge of stealing a Kay Ued a ‘ £l7, th ® pr °P< !rt > ° t Senior-Detective F. J. Brady said that had I,ve< l in Auckland, visited Dunedin early in December, and while there borrowed a bicycle from Kay. Later, he said he had left it at an inquiries by the police showed that he had sold it to a second-hand dealer for £5 10s. It was his eighth appearance before the Court, and he was now serving a sentence of two months' imprisonment for theft. Stewart was sentenced to imprisonment for one month, the term to be served on the expiry of his present sentence. COMMITTED FOR SENTENCE Maurice James Hogg (Mr J. K. Moloney) pleaded guilty to a charge of attempting to break and enter the countinghouse of J. Hammett and Son. 164 Colombo street, with intent to commit theft. Accused was committed to the Supreme Court for sentence. An application by counsel for bail was refused. DISMISSED A charge of theft of tools, the property of Albert Johnson, preferred against William Albert Gray (Mr W. F. Tracey) was dismissed. FIGHTING IN PUBLIC PLACE John Russell Barrett and Colin William Calder were each fined 20s for fighting in a public place. Barrett was also fined £3 for using obscene language. LIQUOR AT DANCE HALL William Parks Richardson and Noel Henry Belcher were each fined £3 for having liquor in a dance hall; and Bernard Blogg was fined 20s for having liquor near a dance hall. CHARGE DISMISSED A charge against Ronald Bates of having liquor in a dance hall was dismissed. FINE IMPOSED Lawrence John Mahar was fined 20s for casting offensive matter in a public place. A BORROWED TARPAULIN Norton D. Duggan (Mr A. I. Cottrell) pleaded guilty to a charge of being unlawfully in possession of a tarpaulin, valued at £lO, the property of the New Zealand Government Railways Department. Evidence was given that Duggan, an employee of the Railways Department, had borrowed a tarpaulin to protect his house while repairs were being made. There was no suggestion that defendant intended to steal the tarpaulin, and had he applied for permission to borrow the tarpaulin it would have been readily granted. When Mr Cottrell asked that the name of the defendant be not published, the Magistrate said as there was no question of dishonesty involved there was no need for such an order. Duggan was fined £3. UNREGISTERED MUSICIAN Douglas W. Dyer was fined £2 for playing an accordion in the street when he did not have a licence to do so. UNREGISTERED FIREARM Wilfred Stubbs was ordered to pay costs for being in possession of a firearm for a period of more than seven days when he was not the registered owner.
