AMERICAN NAVAL STRENGTH
FOUR BATTLESHIPS IN FLEETS TWO TO BE LAID UP SHORTLY (Rec. 8.45 p.m.) - WASHINGTON, Jan. 21. The Secretary of the Navy (Mr James V. Forrestal), reporting to the House of Representatives Armed Services Committee, said the Navy had ready for active duty at December 31 1461 first line combat aircraft, 319 major combat ships, 24 Navy bases in the United States and overseas, and 491,663 officers and men, including 262 admirals. Marines total 108,798 officers and men. The report shows that the Navy’s major combatant ships are divided about evenly between the Atlantic and Pacific Fleets—ls 4 to 165 respectively. Including two aircraft carriers almost completed, the Navy lists as ready in both oceans 15 carriers, 10 escort carriers, four battleships, 37 cruisers, 80 submarines, 143 destroyers. It was recently announced that two of the four battleships would be laid up as an economy measure, leaving only one battleship to each fleet. "
