SEA TRAVEL TO N.Z.
SYDNEY BOOKINGS STOPPED 4000 ON WAITING LIST SYDNEY, January 22. The Sydney office of the Huddart Parker Company has now stopped accepting bookings for travel to New Zealand. The office has more than 4000 intending passengers on the waiting list, and applications have been coming in daily. It is believed that even if the Wanganella is successfully refloated without further damage, repairs will necessitate her withdrawal from the trans-Tasman service for some months. Shipping authorities here are of the opinion that her replacement would be a matter for the New Zealand Government.
The Director of Shipping has stated that Australia has only two passenger ships actively in ■ service at present. These are the Duntroon and the Ormiston. The Manoora and the Manimbla are being used as troopshins between Australia and Japan, and the Canberra will be ii? dry-dock for months. The Manunda and the Westralia are refitting and will not be available till late this year. RETURN OF CREW (P.A.) WELLINGTON, Jan. 22. About 100 members of the Wanganella’s crew are returning to Australia by the first liner with berths available. It is expected to be the Dominion Monarch, sailing from Wellington on January 31.
