RECEPTION OF WELCOME

MUSIC TEACHERS ENTERTAINED A very happy gathering was held at Mayfair Lounge last evening, when the Christchurch branch of the Society of Registered Music Teachers of New Zealand held a reception in honour of the delegates and visitors who are attending the annual conference which opened in Christchurch yesterday morning. The guests* were received by the president of the branch (Mr Ernest Empson) and Mrs Empson, and as might be expected at such a gathering, a programme of outstanding merit was presented. Piano solos were played by Mr Empson and by Mrs Campbell (Dunedin). Songs were sung by Miss Merle Brown (Ashburton), whose sister accompanied her, and by Mr Len Barnes, who was .accompanied by Mr Charles Martin (Invercargill). Mr Empson accompanied Miss Margaret Sicily, who played violin solos;- and instrumental trios were played by three members of the society’s, junior circle—Miss Averill Stone (piano), Mr Clifton Cook (violin), and Mr Harry Stone (’cello). Before supper was served Mr R. Spackman and Mr Barnes caused much hilarity by relating amusing anecdotes. Mr Empson expressed much pleasure at the presence of the Mayor (Mr E. H. Andrews), the Mayoress (Mrs F. Hardy Cookson), and Dr. J. C. Bradshaw (an early member of the branch) and Mrs Bradshaw.
