PETER’S PAL

TROTTING

A CONSISTENT PACER Peter’s Pal’s record of one win, three second placings, and three third placings in eight starts this season indicates that he is above the average; and he may win the’ Stewards’ Handicap at the Forbury Park meeting on Saturday for Mr W. Tither, for whom he is trained at Tinwald by R. Townley Peter’s Pal beganwell in the Electric Handicap at Forbury Park on Saturday, to follow Brown Shadow and Coral Princess with a furlong covered; but his driver, G. Thurlow, was determined to take the lead, and he rushed the Quite Sure gelding to the front in the early part of the race. Peter’s Pal set a fast pace, but he wilted in the straight, and was beaten into third place. Bis time, 3min 20 4-ssec, was particularly good, and his effort entitles him to be one of the favourites for the improvers’ race this week. A hardy type, Peter’s Pal is out of Safe Voyage, which is by Happy Voyage from Deste, by Four Chimes from an Advance mare. Jottings Voco Power ran a fair race in the Vauxhall Handicap at the Forbury Park meeting on Saturday, and he would need to show little improvement on that effort to earn one of the prizes in the Waverley Handicap this week. Worthy Gold, which has paid expenses with five minor placings this season, has been turrted out for a spell. Soviet Star, the runner-up to Clueless in the second division of the Waverley Trot Handicap at the Southland Racing Club’s meeting at Invercargill on Saturday, is an aged gelding.by Grattan Loyal from Ruddy Sun. Accord, which has been placed in five of her last six races, will have her next race at the Marlborough Trotting Club's meeting at Blenheim next week. A mistake at the start cost Hal Derby any chance he had in the Electric Handicap at the Forbury Park Trotting Club’s meeting on Saturday. Nominated at Auckland Confirmed, which has proved one of the most promising improvers seen out this season, will probably make his next appearance at. the Auckland Trotting Club’s meeting, which will be held next week. Confirmed showed his best form this season to win the Canterbury Handicap at the New Brighton Trotting Club’s meeting in 4min 24 l-ssec, which was two-fifths of a second faster than Navigate was required to go to win the bers’ Handicap, the main event on the programme. An upstanding son of Quite Sure and Placid Derby, Confirmed raced well on a heavy track at the Timaru Trotting Club’s meeting on January 11 to finish in second place to Final Count in the Kerrytown Handicap. Owned and trained by J. A. Wilson, Winchmore, Con,firmed will be driven in his races at Auckland by R. Young, and he should pay expenses on the trip.

Smart Filly Sahara Queen registered the fast time of 3min 17sec from a 3min 29sec mark in- the Musselburgh Handicap at the Forbury Park meeting on Saturday; but she was unfortunate in meeting a fine four-year-old in Maori Home, and after a hard struggle over the last furlong she was beaten by half a head. C. G. Isaacson has this, three-year-old ‘daughter of Sandydale and Mary de Oro in splendid order, and she should be prominent all the way in the Gore Memorial Handicap on Saturday. Big Mare

The Papanui trainer, S. Leggett, worked Calumet Queen and a Casanova trotter at Addington on Tuesday morning. A big mare, Calumet Queen showed good form last season to record two wins and three minor placings. She won her first race for the season at the Westport Trotting Club’s meeting on December 26. when, after always being handy, she was not extended to beat Quite Game by three lengths in the first division of the Hagedorn Handicap. After registering three minor placings in her next five starts, Calumet Queen gave her best display for the season when she conceded starts of up to 36 yards in the Omoto Handicap Trot at the Greymouth Jockey Club's meeting on February 18. and then won by a length from Reckless Lady. Bred by her owner. Calumet Queen is by Calumet Axworth from Heather Queen, which, took a record of 2min 8 4-ssec. By Rey de Oro. Heather Queen is out of Scottish Queen, by Diadem from a mare by Black Angel. Looks the Part

On looks, Stirling Castle had the advantage over most Of the field in the Southland Handicap at the Forbury Park meeting on Saturday, and he should eventually make the grade to the best classes. A nicely-moulded four-year-old horse by Dillon Hall from Stirling Lady, Stirling Castle may atone for his defeat on Saturday with a win in the Telegraph’ Handicap this week. Solid Performance

Loyal Flier followed up his two minor placings at the Canterbury Park Trotting Club’s meeting with a solid effort to finish in third place to Bonny Scott and Port Bowen in the Vauxhall Handicap, and, on that display, he should prove hard to beat from the 36 yards mark in the Waverley Handicap on the second day of the meeting. May Win a Sprint

The Methven trainer, M. C. McTigue, has Catalpa engaged in the Otahuhu and Papakura Handicaps at the Auckland Trotting Club’s meeting. The Jack Potts gelding is handicapped to give away starts of up to 84 yards in the Otahuhu Handicap; but he is well placed off the front of the Papakura Handicap, and if he leaves the mark smartly he • should go close to winning this race. A fast pacer, Catalpa started off the season with a splendid performance to win the Speedway Handicap on the first day of the New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club’s National meeting, and on the second day he gave another good display when he beat all but Battle Colours in the National Handicap. By Quite Sure

Master James, the winner of the first division of the Waverley Trot Handicap at the Southland Racing Club's meeting on Saturday, is a four-year-old gelding by Quite Sure from Weary Voyage, which left Prince Rupert to Erin’s King and Sure Voyage to Quite Sure. A winner herself. Weary Voyage is by Happy Voyage from Young Weary, by Sir Hector from Weary, by Brookholm from a Young Irvington mare. Travelled Badly

Avondale Lass, which showed good form as a four-year-o]d in the 1944-45 season when trained for Mr H. Roberts by J. W. Fraser, New Brighton, did not t F aip on as had been expected: and as she had an aversion to travelling In horse floats her owner decided not to persevere with her. Avondale Lass, which has now been mated with Light Brigade, is bv Gamble from Pelting, which is by Huia Dillon from an unnamed mare. Finished Close Up Although he did not secure one of the prizes in the Dunedin Cup on the first day of the Forbury Park Trotting Club’s meeting, Acropolis attracted attention by h’s performance to finish close up in sixth place, and he appeals as a place proposition in the Metropolitan Handicap, the mam event on the programme for the second day of the meeting. A six-year-old son of Dillon Hall, and Seaworthy Acropolis has done well since m n & trail ? ed b y C. M. Laing for Mrs N- M. Adams this season, to register five minor placings in his nine starts. Disappointed

R . imm ? « ainctl two wins and a third placing in his first five starts for I n ’ ve J he impression that he would not be troubled to win in much better company, but his efforts since then have been disappointing. Driven by his trainer W. A. Thomas, Rimmo started in the Musselburgh Handicap at the Forbury Park meeting on Saturday, but after taking the lead early he broke and lost hl s., p ° slt > on - Rimmo paced fast once he settied down again, but another break put him out of the contest.Worthy Prince Destroyed Worthy Prince, which raced in the Southland Handicap at the Forbury Park j£?. ttin S Cl ub’s meeting on SaturdaV,* was destroyed after breaking a fetlock when jogging on C. M. Laing’s track at Tinwald on Tuesday. An aged gelding by King Axworthy from Bonnie Queeri Worthy Prince, which raced in the interests of Messrs N. Ashby and W.
