HEAVY TRUCKS FOR DOMINION
PURCHASE OF ARMY CARRIERS (From Our Own Correspondent.) LONDON, January 11. To try to relieve the shortage of heavy-duty motor vehicles in New Zealand, Mr James Lee Martin, of Auckland, is at present in London to negotiate the purchase of several hundred trucks which were built for use as troop carriers by the British Army. The purchase is being made on behalf of Mr Lee Martin’s firm, in Auckland. Mr Lee Martin, who arrived several weeks ago by air, said there were numbers of returned servicemen in New i Zealand who had been allotted trans- ■ port licences but were unable to be- ? gin operations for lack of suitable! vehicles. The heaviest type truck was i required, such as would be suitable: for the cartage of metal or for hauling I timber from the bush, and as the quota 1 of new trucks available for export to| the Dominion was very small his firm ’ had decided to purchase little-used troop carriers, which, with a minimum of conversion work, could ' be made ideal for the job. s A licence to import the vehicles had : been granted by the New Zealand: Government, and it was hoped to complete the deal in England very shortly.
