FORMING FRENCH CABINET
M.R.P. RECONSIDERS ITS TERMS
ALLOCATION OF DEFENCE PORTFOLIO
(Rec. 12.45 a.m.) LONDON, Jan. 21. The French Cabinet problem, which was regarded as almost solved, became acute to-day when the M.R.P. reconsidered the terms on which it would participate, says the “Daily Telegraph’s” correspondent in Paris. The main issue is Mr Ramadler’s suggested compromise that a Communist should be Minister of Defence, who would exercise control over three Ministers—drawn from other parties —for the armed forces.
It is believed General de Gaulle’s direct influence caused the M.R.P. to become firmer. General de Gaulle is believed to have told his friends in the M.R.P. that it would be dangerous for a Communist Minister to be in a position of authority over the general staff.
