MINES IN CORFU CHANNEL

BRITISH CHARGES TO BE HEARD SECURITY COUNCIL’S DECISION (Rev. 7 p.m.) NEW YORK. January 20. The Security Council overrode vigorous Russian objections and decided to consider British Charges that Albania illegally laid mines in the Corfu Straits. Russia abstained from voting. All the other 10 members approved of the British application for a hearing. Mr Gromyko (Russia) argued that the British had not exhausted all attempts at a direct settlement. He declared that Britain’s description of the issue as a threat to peace was “more than strange,” and he added: “The fact that a great deal of noise is accompanying this question does not make it a threat to world peace.” Sir Alexander Cadogan declared that Britain had failed in repeated efforts to secure an adjustment of her differences with Albania, and therefore she felt compelled to seek the Council’s intervention.
