COURSE FOR SCHOOL TEACHERS

SERIES OF LECTURES IN ENGLISH ARRANGED A course in English for post-prim-ary school teachers will begin to-mor-row at the Teachers’ Training College, Christchurch. It will continue for a week, and 'will be attended by about 1.60 teachers from schools in both the North Island and the South Island. A series of lectures will be given, with the aim of illustrating developments in teaching methods. The subjects for the first few days include “English as I see it,” by a practising teacher; “Classroom Problems’; “Teachers and Pupils’ Reading”: and “Poetry and Appreciation. Book displays have also been arranged in conjunction with the course by several Christchurch firms and the National Library Service. The displays deal both with English literature and methods of teaching. It is also hoped to arrange one or two visits to secondary school libraries.

The course has been arranged by Mr J. V. Burton, secretary of the teachers’ refresher course committee, at Wellington. The course administrator will be Mr S. R. Cuming (head of the English department of the Christchurch Boys’ High School), and the chairman will be Mr W. J. Scott, lecturer in English at the Teachers’ Training College, Wellington. Lectures will be concentrated chiefly in the mornings and evenings, so that the afternoons are free. Assistance with accommodation has been provided by the Cathedral Grammar School and the Bishop Julius Hostel for men and women respectively. The Mayor (Mr E. H. Andrews) will be present at the official opening tomorrow. and the Education Department will be represented by Mr L. J. Cameron, inspector of post-primary schools.
