WELLINGTON CLUB

RACING

BRIDGE ACRE FAVOURED PROSPECTS FOR MEETING TO-DAY From Our Own Reporter WELLINGTON, Jan. 21. The Wellington Racing Club’s summer meeting will be continued at Trentham to-morrow, when good fields will parade for the third day’s programme. The track is now very firm, and unless rain falls overnight the going will be faster than it was on Saturday. The majority of the field in the Wellington Racing Club Handicap did not race last Saturday, and only six of the Wellington Cup field will parade. The topweight, Golden Souvenir, has 51b more to carry than he had when he finished third in the Wellington Cup, but in spite of his lOst the gallant Lang Bian horse has still to be respected. Weight-carriers of his ability are a rarity. Signal Officer is a much better horse at a mile and a half than he is over two miles, and if he can be induced to race kindly he may be very hard to beat. His performance in the Metropolitan Handicap at Riccarton was one to be remembered, and if he is in a generous mood he could produce it again. On her Dunedin running, Bridge Acre appeals as, being the hardest to beat. On this occasion she meets Golden Souvenir on 51b better terms. The Auckland candidate, Kerry Lad, is regarded as a much improved horse, and his form up to a mile and a quarter is good. He looks a little big in condition, but apparently races best that way. On appearances he needs a race, but appearances can be deceiving.

Langue d’Or has failed before after running a good race over two miles, and this race may be a shade soon for him. Cattenck Bridge and Swift Quarry would need to improve considerably on their Cup running, and a better prospect appears to be Merry Robin, an improving four-year-old with staying potentialities. Foxhaven was running on in the Cup but has not struck last year’s form. The best of those lower in the weights may be Blanket, which was runner-up to Bruce in the Dominion Handicap on the first day of the meeting. The most interesting race of the day will be the Gloaming Stakes, which should resolve itself into a battle between Beau Le Havre, Royal Tan, and Howe, with bakuntala also a place possibility. The acsence of any runner likely to go out ana set a solid pace may place a premium on brilliance, in which case Beau Le Havre may be seen to advantage. Royal Tan can probably match Beau Le Havre for stamina, and it will be a pity if the race develops into a sprint over the last four furlongs. Howe has yet to be successful beyond a mile, but m a slow-run race he would be harder to head off. He is one of the hardiest' three-year-old? in commission, and is not likely to give in lightly. Sakuntala, has not raced since she won the New Zealand Oaks, but she has undoubtedlv improved in the meantime, and bears a well-trained appearance. The remainder nave their limitations, and the issue appears to be between the respective Derby winners and Howe.

Yasda stands out in the Metropolitan Handicap, in spite of an increase of 121 b on the weight he carried when he won t l le first da y- Tideless meets him on 81b better terms, but with Yasda likely to be an improved horse she may not be able to turn the tables. On his Telegraph Handicap running Theocritus has good prospects. He showed determination' in his struggle with Da Vinci, and an extra furlong may not trouble him now. His form has not always been consistent, but he is very well at present. Lady Nahleen was a fair third in the York Handicap, and may be the best prospect of the others. If the track eased and this race was chosen for Leigh Barton, he would probably be the next choice to Yasda.

The Douro Handicap is the only race in which there are brackets. They are Robingay and Peculate, Kilmont and Clyde Bridge, G»y Joy and Gyration, and Balcherne and Rothnic.
