♦ te Y ay ?’i th , e y° un S hippopotamus at the Auckland zoo, is growing rapidly. He has been healthy from birth and it seems that it will not be long before he will be moved to a pen of his own. Less trouble has been experienced in rearing him than is usual with most of the young animals. When a hippopotamus is born *Bl the zoo. the keepers drain most of the water from the creek which runs through the enclosure so that the baby will not drown. Baby hippopotamuses usually cannot stay on the bank, as their feet are too soft to support them Cetewayo. with an unusual hardiness was scrambling round the bank the day after he was born. He also showed his ability to swim at an unusually early age. and so the normal depth of the creek, about four feet, was restored.
