TUESDAY (Before Mr Jlaymond Ferner, S.M.) DESERTION FROM SHIP Leonard Kenneth Dare, aged 20 years, was sentenced to one month’s imprisonment with hard labour, for desertion from an overseas ship.ADMITTED TO PROBATION John Henry Pearce, aged 21 years (Mr J. K. Moloney), who is at present serving a term of imprisonment for false pretences, pleaded guilty to charges of stealing the sum of £lO from Noel Petras Kiesey at Whangarei on November 23 and, with intent to defraud, he obtained from Noel Petras Kiesey sums of money amounting to £45 by means of falsely representing that he had money owing to him by the Union Steam Ship Company. Detective-Sergeant A. A. Herron said Pearce had met Miss Kiesey at Whangarei .in November, and had told her that he had come from Australia and had cheques coming to him. Miss Kiesey had lent him a radio set, which he had sold. On a third charge of obtaining from Anthony Collins a watch valued at £4 Bs, Pearce had lent Collins 10s, and had asked for a security, which Collins produced in a wristlet watch. Pearce then sold the watch for 30s, and when Collins asked for its return, Pearce told Collins that he had sent the watch to be repaired. Pearce was admitted to probation for two years after his term of three months’ imprisonment has expired, a condition being that he make restitution of the moneys stolen at the rate of £4 a month.

Hubert John Taylor (Mr D. J. Hewitt), charged with fraudulently obtaining from Yee Paleon the sum of £2 by falsely representing that his name was J. L. Stewart, and that he could obtain five tyres for the sum of £8 10s, was convicted and admitted to probation for two years on condition that he make restitution of the sum of £2 within two months. TRAFFIC BREACHES Offenders against the traffic regulations were dealt with as follows:—Exceeding speed limit of 40 miles an hour: Victor Leonard Neate, fined £3 10s. Cycling at night without lights: James Fordyce and Alexander Forsyth, each fined 10s. Cycling without hands on handle-bars: Norman Clarence Brake, Roderick Chapman, Claude Robert Dickie, Roland Gage. Roger Greer. Jack Hall, Percival William Mayes, and Alex. John Sutherland, each fined 10s No warrant of fitness: John S. Scott, William S. West, and Otto Carl White, each fined 15s; George Gray Aitken, Victor Beaumont. Thomas Wright Edwards, Hector George Hubbard, Frank Charles Platt (three charges), George Arthur Rowe, Winifred Dora Walker, and Gordon I. M. Williams, fined 10s on each charge. Edward Thomas Callaghan and Leonard Arthur Watson were ordered to pay costs. Incorrect parking: Trevor Thomas Henry Naylor, fined 20s; Jennie Muir Hamilton, Ernest Vivian Murray, and Walter Edward Parker, each fined 10s. For overloading heavy transport, the Papanui Timber Company was fined 20s. Clifford Frank Beswick was fined 10s for obstructing a vehicle entrance; Mervyn William Broomhall 20s for failing to give way, Edward Thomas Callaghan 20s for not having a driver’s licence; Victor Camden Constant 10s for driving without reasonable consideration: and Edward A. Gobbe 20s for driving t with no consideration for other road users. Desmond William Frame and Arthur Kitchener Hopa were each fined 10s for parking over the time limit; George Goodge 30s for failing to keep to the left; Irene McKegg 10s for parking in a prohibited area; Randal Carl Neithe 20s for overtaking on an intersection; Marguerite Lucy Rhodes 20s for permitting an unlicensed driver to drive a car; Erik Rutherford ordered tb pay costs for obstructing a fire-plug; John S. Scott, £2 for not having a heavy traffic licence: Mary Herbert Tripp, ordered to pay costs for parking in a prohibited area: Madeline Turner 10s for proceeding against a school patrol: Stanley Charles 10s for parking too close to a corner; and Sam Young 10s for having unlicensed heavy transport. For riding outside two other cyclists, Trevor Cartwright was fined 10s.
