POSTAL WORKERS IN AUSTRALIA
COMMENT ON STRIKE THREATS (N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) SYDNEY, Jan. 21. “The postal workers need not have resorted to strike threats to obtain wage increases,” said the PostmasterGeneral (Senator D. Cameron), when told of the decision of the postal workers to hold a 24-hour stoppage unless they received a substantial wage rise by February. Senator Cameron continued that the Arbitration Court could have settled the postal workers’ just demands satisfactorily. He would discuss the men’s claims with representatives of the union and he had power, within the limits of the Public Service Act to effect a settlement by personal intervention. Any settlement would have Commonwealth-wide application.
