AND O. COMPANY’S PROGRAMME The P. and O. Company is building 71 new ships, at a cost of £5tg.39.000,000, the chairman (Sir William Currie) said at the annual meeting of shareholders in London. The new ships have already been either laid down or contracted for. Their total gross tonnage will be 481,000. The shipbuilding programme, he said, would be subject to expansion as deemed necessary with the development of overseas trade, and was quite apart from ships which, through age, would require replacement in the near future. Building had to be continuous, particularly at present, when war losses had to be made good. The feature of the consolidated balancesheet, he said, was the excess of current assets over liabilities, amounting to £5tg.49.000.000. The group position was extremely liquid; securities and other marketable stocks of constituent member! totalled more than £60.000,000. These large resources would be needed in their entirety, however, to restore the fleets of the various companies.
