Severe Cuts In Allocations STEEL INDUSTRY AFFECTED (N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) (Rec. 9 p.m.) LONDON, Jan. 20. Cuts in the coal allocation of such severity that the steel output may be forced down by 1,000,000 tons in 1947, are to start to-day, according to the industrial correspondent of the “Daily Express.” Detailing the cuts, the correspondent says that allocations to the steel industry are being reduced by one quarter and to other industries, including ordnance and cotton factories, by one half.’ The British Iron and Steel Federation has confirmed the report of a cut of 25 per cent, in the coal allocation 1° steei industry beginning today. ‘ The cut will have the most serious effect on industry,” says the Federation. The chairman of the Nuffield Organisation (Sir Miles Thomas) was quoted by the “Daily Express” correspondent as saying: “Factories may have to close for part of the week. Output i will fall with overhead charges un-1 changed, and therefore it is extremely likely that price increases will have to be made.”
