RUSSIANS AGAINST MERGING ZONES
STATEMENT BY BERLIN NEWSPAPER
(Rec. 7 p.m.) BERLIN, Jan. 19. The Russian-sponsored Socialist Unity Party has stated that the Russian zone of Germany was not ready to accept invitations to join the economic merger of the British and American zones. The chairman of the party (Otto Grotewohl) asserted that Russia regarded the zone merger as “not conducive to the strengthening of German unity.” He claimed that the political and economic administration of the western zones was far behind that of the Russian zone in the “progress of democratisation.” The Allied Military Government has granted £825,000 for unemployment support for Berlin workers in factories closed because of the fuel shortage, says the British-controlled German News Service. The relief will not exceed 18s a week.
The British and United States Military Governments have confirmed the election of Dr. Victor Agartz as chairman of the bi-zonal committee for economics and head of its administrative machinery, says the British News Service. Dr. Agartz succeeds Dr. Mueller, who was voted out of office by the six States in the British and American zones.
