" The Press ” Special Service . WELLINGTON, January 20. Kerry Lad, the Auckland candidate for the Weßington Racing Club Handidhp on Wednesday, was responsible for an excellent trial at Trentham this morning, when he beat Royal Tan easily over seven furlongs. Although Kerry Lad has not raced since he won the Summer Cup at Ellerslie on December 30, he bears a well-trained appearance and will strip at JJ the top of his form. He will be ridden by H. N. Wiggins, who was successful on him at Ellerslie. Royal Tan (L. J. Ellis) led Kerry Lad (Wiggins) over the early stages of seven furlongs, out the Auckland horse was on terms when passing the half-mile post in 39 3-ssec. Travelling well within himself, Kerry Lad ran away from Royal Tan in the straight to win the trial by four lengths, the last half-mile taking‘sl 1-5 sec, making Imin 30 4-ssec for the full distance.

Most of the candidates for the third day of the Wellington meeting raced on Saturday. There was little fast work this morning. Conditions were ideal, and the outside of the course proper and the plough provided fast going. The two-year-old, General Victory, jumped away ahead of Tideless, from the half-mile, but Tideless soon gathered him and was doing better at the completion of the trial in 48sec, the last three in 37sec. Beau Son and Blue Bonny, who are to race at the Ashhurst meeting at Awapuni on Wednesday, ran half-a-mile on the plough in 49sec, the last three in 37 l-ssec. Blue Bonny was too good for his companion in the run home. Sakuntala attracted attention when she beat Keening by two lengths, with Perfect Peace a similar margin away, at the end of a mile. Keening dropped in behind his companions to the half-mile post, where he moved up to be on terms, but Sakuntala soon went into the lead, and finished full of running to record Imin 41 2-ssec, the last half in 50 4-ssec. Sakuntala has not raced since she won the Oaks at Riccarton in November. She is in good condition to contest the Gloaming Stakes.

Kardkeya sprinted three furlongs in 36 2-ssec. He did not appear to have much in reserve at the finish. Darius was too good for Sly Gold over five furlongs in Imin 3 l-ssec, the last half-mile in 50sec. Darius looks in better condition than he did on the opening day, and promises to give a better account of himself in the Nursery Handicap.

Lord Elgin gave Gyration and Rothnic several lengths start over five furlongs, but had no trouble overtaking them in ■ straight, running the last half-mile ln to l;ssec, and the last three furlongs in 36 4-ssec. Master Baron and Kite 'X e J e to g et h e r through half-a-mile in 49 2-ssec. Kite High will have his first race at the meeting in the Douro Hack Handicap.
