INQUIRY INTO STRANDING

MARINE MINISTER’S STATEMENT

SHIP HOLED IN TWO COMPARTMENTS

(P.A.) WELLINGTON, January 20. An inquiry would be held into all the circumstances of the stranding of the Wanganella, said the Minister of Marine (Mr J. O’Brien), in reply to an inquiry this evening. The Minister said he had visited the scene of the stranding and hoped that with the extra tug power available the ship could be got ,off the rocks, but indications to-day did not seem very .bright. He understood that the ship was holed in its first two compartments, but that there was no water in the two aft compartments, which, if the fine weather held, should make it possible to get the ship off. The Minister said that the stranding of such a fine passenger ship was almost a national calamity, at the present time, because of the number of persons wanting transport to and from Australia. At present there was no ship in sight to give the service the Wanganella could.
