Davis Cup Zone Final.— The United States Lawn Tennis Association decided that the Davis Cup inter-zone final must be completed by August 7, if played in the United States, or earlier if played elsewhere. The place and date will be determined later. The national singles championships will begin at Forest Hills on September 5, thus following the Davis Cup challenge matches set down for August 30 and 31 and September 1, at a place to be determined.—New York, Jan. 19.

British Empire Boxing Title.— The British Boxing Board has notified Stadiums, Ltd., in Sydney, that it now recognises Vic Patrick as the leading contender for the British Empire light-weight title. The board has given its sanction to Stadiums, Ltd., to choose an opponent for Patrick, and has agreed to accept the winner of that bout as the British Empire champion. It expressed regret that the British light-weight champion, Ron James was unable to make the weight for the Empire title fight with Patrick. The company has sent a cable to the Canadian light-weight champion, Danny Webb, offering him a bout with Patrick. The manager of the Sydney Stadium (Mr Harry Miller) said that New Zealand fighters were entitled to participate. but that there were no lightweights in New Zealand who could be regarded as legitimate opponents for Patrick.—Sydney. Victoria Retains Sheffield Shield.— Victoria to-day defeated Queensland by an innings and 13 runs in the Sheffield Shield match, thus clinching its hold on the shield for the season.
