CANTERBURY CHAMPIONSHIPS OPENED
HIGH STANDARD IN MEN’S EVENTS
Keen interest was shown by a crowded attendance at the opening night of the Canterbury amateur swimming championships which were held at the Tepid Baths last evening. Officials of the Canterbury Centre of the New Zealand Amateur Swimming Association, which is controlling the championship. Commented that the competition in all events was keen this year, and that the standard of swimming in the men’s section was high. The intermediate boys were also swimming well by provincial standards; but the standard in the women’s events was only fair. The record for the 100 yards women’s breaststroke championship was broken by Miss J. Dixon (Spreydon Club), who covered the distance in 89 3-ssec. Miss Dixon is ,an intermediate class swimmer; but she was able to win the senior title in this event. The previous record of 90 2-ssec was established in 1946 by Miss E. Benson. R. Hatchwell (United), the present New Zealand 100 yards championship titleholder, was unlucky in failing by onefifth of a second to break the record for the men’s 50 yards freestyle event, after he had made a time of 25 l-ssec both
in one of the heats and also in the final. The record of 25sec for this event was set in 1933 and it still stands. In the inter-club competitions Spreydon Club now has 18 points and a strong lead over the other clubs in the contest.
