STOCK EXCHANGES ACTIVITY IN LOANS AND BANK SHARES Markets were brighter on the Christchurch Stock Exchange yesterday, and there was an increased volume of business in a wider range of stocks, with activiity in Government loans and bank shares. N.Z. Government 3 per cent. Stock, due December, 1953-56, changed hands at £lOO 7s 6d, and more was wanted at £lOO ss; 3 per cent. Stock, due 1960-63, had dealings at £lOO 15s, and closed with unsupported sellers at that price; 4 per cent. Stock, due 1954-58, had business at £lO6 ss, and late offers of £lO6 2s 6d met with no response. Bank of Australasia rose sharply to business at £l3 10s; the last recorded local turnover on December 19 was at £l2 16s. A late sale of Commercial Bank of Australia on Tuesday was reported at 23s Bd, and there, were further buyers yesterday at that figure. Commercial Banking of Sydney were stronger with buyers at £26, sellers at £29 10s. National Bank of New Zealand aavanced to 70s. Bank of New South Wales scored a rise of 15s at £4O 10s. Union Bank of Australia (ex div.) were firm at £l2 ss, and more were wanted at £l2 2s 6d, sellers'at £l2 10s.

N.Z. Farmers’ Co-op. (10s paid) were fractionally firmer with dealings at 9s 2d and further buyers at 9s Id. P. and Q. Deferred Stock was stronger with buyers at 87s 6d. Southland Frozen Meat changed hands at 625, the market closing 61s buyers, 62s 6d sellers. Ballins Breweries were firmer, buyers offering 34s 6d, sellers asking 355. N.Z. Breweries changed hands at last year’s closing price, 58s 6d. A late sale of Dunlop New Zealand (ord.) on Tuesday was reported at 7s Id, business yesterday was at 7s 2d, and more were wanted at 7s Id, sellers at 7s 4d. Fletcher Holdings changed hands at 38s 6d and closed with unsupported sellers at 38s 9d; the last recorded local business on December 2 was at 35s 6d. Buyers of Selfridges raised their bids to 41s 6d without attracting sellers. Woolworths, Ltd., had dealings at 29s 3d and 295, and these were sellers’ and buyers’ closing quotations respectively. Mount Lyells were firmer, buyers offering 22s 9d, sellers asking 23s 9d. In the unlisted section, Whakatane Paper Mills were dealt in at 6s lid and more were wanted at that price, sellers at. 7s.
