FINED £7000

GOLDSBROUGH, MORT AND COMPANY

TRADING ABOVE FIXED PRICES (Rec. 9 p.m.) MELBOURNE. Jan. 15. For trading in lucerne hay above the fixed prices. Goldsbrough, Mort and Company. Ltd., were fined £7OOO in the City Court. Melbourne, to-day. William Erie Hocking, partner in the firm of Fallow Products Agency, was ordered to serve seven days of a sentence of three months’ imprisonment. Recording the convictions, the Magistrate said that it appeared that the real profiteers in the case were the growers of the lucerne hay. and that neither of the defendants bought the goods for the purpose of making excess profits. Goldsbrough. Mort and Company, Ltd., was fined £lOOO on each of seven charges. Hocking was sentenced to three months’ imprisonment on each of four charges, the sentences to be concurrent, and the defendant to be released on a good behaviour bond after serving seven days. The defence was that the price* order under which the charges were laid was invalid because it did not clearly define wholesale trading.
