CRICKET

TWO DAY MATCHES IN SENIOR GRADE

MORNING PLAY TO BE RETAINED

Two-day games, commencing at 11 a.m., and ending at 6 p.m., with a lunch interval of half an hour, will be played for the remainder of the season in the senior grade and second grade A competitions, conducted by the Canterbury Cricket Association. This was decided at a special meeting of delegates to the association held last evening. Mr E. R. Caygill pre-

Discussion on the question of starting times and the duration of matches was prolonged, and varying opinions were expressed.

Mr Caygill said that the alternatives to the continuation of the present all-day, one-day games were: first, two-day games starting in the morning and with a longer lunch hour; and second, two-day games starting in the afternoons. The chairman of the management committee (Mr D. A. Colville) said that players were. now in a position to judge whether they wanted to continue one-day cricket. He felt himself that as much cricket as possible should be played. There were difficulties in the way, but the chance was offering to play more cricket and to cater for the young players with ambition. He suggested two-day games, commencing at 10.30 a.m., with an hour for lunch

The desires of the clubs, expressed through their ‘delegates, were:—Old Collegians (Mr P. H. T. Alpers): two-day games, from 11 a.m. to 12.30 p.m. and 1 p.m. to 6 p.m.; High School Old Boys (Mr J. T. Eltoft): members of the senior teams were almost equally divided between one-day and two-day games; St. Albans (Mr J. Smith): continuation of one-day games as at present; West Christchurch (Mr E. M. Hay): two-day games, from 11 a.m. each day, with half an hour for lunch: Sydenham (Mr L. A. Butterfield) : two-day games beginning at 10.30 a.m. with half an hour for lunch; East Christchurch (Mr M. K. Lohrey): twoday games, play commencing at 1 p.m.; Lancaster Park (Mr W. E. Mappiebeck): two-day games, commencing at 10.30 a.m. with half an hour for Iqnch. Mr W. J. V. Hamilton then moved that first grade and second grade A games be of two days’ duration, play commencing at 10.30 a.m„ with an hour for lunch. An amendment that play start at 11 a.m., with a lunch interval of half an hour, was moved by Mr R. C. Saunders. Mr Hamilton then withdrew his motion, and the changes suggested by Mr Saunders, which are to take effect immediately, were agreed to without dissent. It was further decided that two-day games from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. be played in second grade B and third grade A; and that one-day games, from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m., be played, with a tirpe limit for declarations to be defined by the competitions committee. On the motion ef Mr J. L. Kerr, it was decided to recommend to the competitions committee that the second elevens of the Christchurch Boys’ High School and Christ’s College, and the first elevens of Papanui Technical College and Christchurch West High School, be transferred to third grade A to enable them to play two-day games. The meeting also decided to increase the subscriptions of senior and junior clubs, and entrance fees.
