INCOME TAX ASSESSMENTS
. Sir, —Being a taxpayer, I would be interested to know when I am going to receive my income tax assessment. In previous years when my income return was sent to Wellington I got my assessment several months before due date; yet since the office has been moved to Christchurch it seems to be months behind. I expect that when the tax becomes due and payable within the next month the department will expect it to be paid on the due date or the penalty paid if it is overdue.— Yours, etc., TAXABLE. January 13, 1947. [Replying to this letter, the superintendent of the Christchurch branch of the Lands and Income Tax Department said: “Because of the establishment of the department in Christchurch at such a late date in the year (August), it was not possible to begin assessment of taxation as usual. All taxpayers who have not received their income tax assessments so far will be granted the customary 21 days’ period in which to pay, from the date of their receiving their assessments.”]
