RURAL FIRE PREVENTION

Sir,—No doubt some sense of civic responsibility is lacking in both members of the Kowai and Waipara County Councils. Your columns record the fact that only members of the Eyre and Ashburton County Councils considered it necessary to attend the demonstration arranged by the Canterbury Rural Fire Prevention Committee. In a fortnight’s time the whole of North Canterbury .from the Waimakariri to the Waiau will be one big fire menace; and what has been done by the councils concerned to meet the danger? A few stirrup pumps kept in the council chambers at Balcairn and Waikari will do very little good for the folks some 10 or 15 miles away. What is wanted is complete coverage and organisation, and this is sadly lacking in both counties concerned. It’s not too late to get on the job; but soon it may be.— Yours, etc..

TRAILER PUMP. Amberley, December 17, 1946. [The Waipara County Clerk (Mr S. L. Boon), replying on behalf of the Waipara County Council and the Kowai County Council, says: “A trailer pump has been allocated to the Weka Pass district, ahd when it is received a demonstration will be arranged for this and nearby counties. If ‘Trailer Pump’ will call at the county office he will be shown the fire prevention arrangements covering the county and why the councils mentioned did not attend the demonstration.”]
