Amongst the most useful organisations in Christchurch is the Mental Welfare Society, which for many years has, quietlyt and efficiently, worked for the betterment of the patients at Sunnyside Mental Hospital and at the Templeton Farm School. Members have the hospitals regularly, have supplied extra comforts for the patients, and have given practical help to many who have regained their health and been discharged from hosP U society now has plans for obtaining a seaside home at which patients could have a holiday in fresh environment, and with the object of furthering this scheme, the society is making its first appeal to the public for funds. It has been granted permission to hold a street appeal at the end of January, and arrangements for the collection were made at a meeting' of the appeal committee, held at Epworth Chambers last evening. Mr S. W. Jameson (chairman of the committee) presided and emphasised the importance of enlisting the aid of a very large number of collectors to man all street corners in the city on the day of the appeal. It was reported that circulars had been sent to* organisations and business firms soliciting support for the appeal, and that already a good response had been received. Several donations had been forwarded to the treasurer (Mr F. Rhodes) and volunteers had notified the secretary (Miss E. C. Hanna) of their readiness to collect on the day of the appeal. It was decided to advertise widely for more collectors. Two members offered to visit Lyttelton, to arrange a collection there; and Mr H. M. Hall (president of the Mental Welfare Society) undertook to organise a collection in New Brighton. Mr Jameson announced that the headquarters of the appeal would be at the Realm Dance Hall, Gloucester street.
