Tennis Players in Australia. — Beating . Jim Gilchrist 6-3, 6-4, the American, Tom Brown, won the Manly seaside singles championship* yesterday. He again proved that he will be difficult to beat in the Australian championships which begin on Tuesday. In the doubles, the unseeded players Jack May and Jack Dart won the title from the Davis Cup squad members Geoff Brown and Billy Sidwell, 1-6, 6-1, 6-3. Dart and May defeated the Americans Tom Brown and Barnes 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 in the semi-final, although it was not expected that they would extend the Davis Cup pair. In Adelaide, the South Australian singles championship final was all-American, Gardnar Mulloy beating Bill Talbert 6-3, 8-6, 9-7. — Sydney. January 12. U.S. Swimmer Sets Record.—The American swimmer, Ralph Wright, broke the Australian 110 yards breaststroke record when he won a scratch race at the State championship carnival at the North Sydney Olympic Pool in 76.3 seconds. The previous record, 76.7 seconds was established by an Englishman, Jack Davies, in 1938. The winner used the new butterfly stroke with two strokes to each breath. Wright failed, in the 110 yards backstroke championship, but the Hawaiian, Fred Taoli, won the 440 yard freestyle title easily in 5 minutes 2.3 seconds. —Sydney, January 12.

He beat his brother Don by 70 yards, completing the distance in 9 minutes 28.6 seconds. Campbell, whom officials believe is the greatest middle distance runner Australia has produced, has refused to compete in the Australian championship at Perth on January 25 because his brother Don has not been chosen in the New South Wales team. —Sydney, January
