NEW HOURS FOR FIREMEN

—• — CONFERENCE TO RESUME IN WELLINGTON ' MR M. E. LYONS TO ATTEND The new proposal to fix a 60-hour “on station” period each week for fire brigadesmen throughout New Zealand, details of which were explained by the Deputy-Mayor (Mr M. E. Lyons) at Monday’s meeting of the City Council, will be discussed in Wellington to-day at a special conference, attended by representatives of the firemen and of the New Zealand Fire Boards’ Association. The Christchurch member representing the association will be Mr Lyons, whq will take the place of the chairman of th&- Christchurch Fire Board and of the association, Mr T. M. Charters. Beyond expressing the view that some “startling developments” might come from the conference, Mr Charters would make no comment on the new proposals yesterday. It is reported that one of the difficulties in the new proposal is the question of living accommodation for firemen. Many boards throughout New Zealand provide living quarters for the men, and if the staff was doubled by men being off-station for considerable periods boards might be placed in a difficult position.
