HIGH PRICES FOR DIAMONDS
BIG SUMS REALISED AT AUCTION (P.A.) WELLINGTON, Dec. 14. Among luxury goods on the prohibited importation list in New Zealand are diamonds. As a result, unset diamonds are in the liveliest demand by jewellers. At an auction sale in Wellington one brooch fitted with 121 small diamonds realised £485. while a five-stone ring brought £550. A gold ring containing a single square emerald found a buyer at £315, while a dainty wristlet watch set with small diamonds brought £230. One ring of handsome design—a large ruby set in diamonds —brought £95, and another diamond ring £57 10s. A string of pearls beautifully graded brought £660. It was stated that the majority of buyers did not wish to retairt this jewellery as it was, but wanted diamonds and other jewels to use in new settings.
