ESPERANTO
Sir, —Zamenhof Day, December 15, has again been celebrated by the Esperantists of the world. The first public speech by this humble Jew in his man-made international medium was at Boulogne in 1905. Wonder of wonders. we could all understand him! And yet. 40 years later, the nations are still wallowing in an orgy of inadequate and often, faulty translations, necessitating the saying of everything at least three times over. No wonder some of the delegates at UNO grow restiye and protest! But, "his soul gbes marching on,” for in August, 1947, the first post-war International Congress of Esperantists is to be held in Berne, Switzerland. In the meantime, the Twelfth New Zealand Esperanto Congress it to take place in Auckland from January 1 to 3. Zamenhof’s followers still march on. Let UNO learn at Berne that the language barrier has already been smashed and act accordingly.—Yours, etc.. J. ARNOLD HODGES. Rangiora, December 16, 1946.
