LAND DETERIORATION
Sir, —Comment on “Settler’s” outburst of December 5» comes from an editorial in the “Wanganui Herald” of February 25, 1945. entitled “The Good Earth Goes to the Sea.” It says: “In the South Island the good earth is going to the sea, the rivers carrying away the life-blood of our national prosperity and health. . . . Hillsides have been scoured by fire, axe, and rain in a more efficient manner than with modern machinery. Although the public are becoming tree conscious, there is no need to leave this work to the Government or local bodies. Farmers who preferred to sit on their verandas rather than have their paddocks sheltered by trees offered free by the Waitotara Council are tynical of many. . . ” Canterbury foothills which show numerous signs of erosion . . . burnt hillsides, shingle slides, and muddy rivers, bear this contention out. _ “Settler” will find in the “Mercantile Gazette” who “farms” the farmers.—Yours, etc.
