APPLICATION FOR SALE OF BLOCK AT SOCKBURN
Decision was reserved m an application before the Christchurch Land Sales Committee yesterday for the approval of the sale of a block of land at Sockburn to be used as the site of a projected textile factory
The land under consideration was an area of 53 acres 2 roods 29.4 perches, facing the Main South road and Curletts road. The vendor was the Pyne, Gould, Guinness. Ltd., Provident and Superannuation Association, Ltd., and the purchaser waS the Cotton Textile Corporation Ltd
For the Crown, Messrs W. G. Hadley and J H D. Johnston valued the property at £9OOO The price asked was £18,783 19s lid. There was a record of a previous sale in 1943 for £6441 18s 9d In evidence for the purchaser, it was stated that if the price were reduced the sale would not be madb. The Land Sales Act was intended primarily to protect former servicemen In this case, if the application were approved it would not harm any former serviceman’s interests. The company concerned wanted to start a textile industry near Christchurch, and the committee should consider helping it to do so. The land had a special value to the purchaser as an industrial site.
