ASHBURTON SHOW

EXCELLENT DISPLAY OF STOCK

RECORD ENTRIES RECEIVED With record entries, the Ashburton Agricultural and Pastoral Association held one of the best shows in its history at Ashburton yesterday. Particularly in the parade of prize-winning stock there was an impressive display of horses and cattle which would do credit to any district in the province. All stock was exhibited in the pink of condition, which was evidence of the careful preparation that had been undertaken for the show ring as well as the exceptionally favourable winter through which the stock had passed. A healthy sign of the return to postwar conditions was the appearance of many outside breeders, which helped considerably to boost competition, particularly in cattle and horses, which attracted some of the best animals in Canterbury. The show was largely attended by local residents, as well as a good representation from neighbouring districts. the gate receipts of £5lO 15s being a record for the association. A considerable revival of interest was shown in farm machinery, which was on display in greater variety than for several years.

Totalling 2929, the entries were a record, comparing more than favourably with last year's total of 2570 and 2388 in 1944, 2301 in 1941, and 2485 in 1940. The greatest increase, on last year’s figures were in the general classes, horses, and cattle. General classes including home industries and classes for school children attracted 1774 entries, compared with 1610 last year, while entries for horses, which showed a revival, were 459 against 356 in 1945. Cattle increased from 115 last year to 213 this year, the best entry for many years. Sheep The strongest section in sheep numerically was Corriedale, which attracted the most entries for some years. Competition was mainly between five breeders, a notable performance being that of Douglas Johnston (Mayfield), who won first prize in every class in which he entered. He carried off the championship and reserve 1 award in rams, but was beaten for the same awards in ewes by J. H. Grigg (Longbeach). “The champion ewe combined all the good qualities for wool and mutton,” said the judge (Mr A. Twaddle). The champion ram had a high utility carcase covered with good quality wool, Tnere was some keen rivalry in Southdowns, J. D. Galpin (Southbridge) taking most of the major honours with some good specimens of the breed. J. H. Grigg won the championship for rams. S. G. Lemon (Lauriston) was a successful breeder with both championships and the reserve award for rams in the Border Leicester section, while Guy Letham (Lauriston) won the reserve championship for ewes. Cattle Some very well-bred animals were entered in the cattle section where there was keen competition, particularly in Shorthorns, Jerseys, and Friesians. The quality of the exhibits was good. "She is as good as we can get,” said the judge (Mr R. J. Black), commenting on the champion Shorthorn cow exhibited by G. G. Goodwin, who won the championship at Rangiora with the same animal. Mr Black added that the Shorthorns were outstanding. The championship for bulls went to D. M. Brown (Temuka). Commenting on the Jerseys, the judge (Mr J. J. Hughey) said that the quality surprised him. The champion cow of H. M Greenaway (Eiffelton) was a good three-year-old with a well attached udder. Portis Brothers (Oamaru) received the major bull award. In the Friesian section, R. E. Gillman and Son (Rangiora) took the cow championship, and G. A. Parsons (Eiffelton) received . the same award for bulls. A local breeder of Jerseys, J. L. Tucker, was awarded the ribbon for the best dairy cow on the grounds. \ , Horses A feature of the horse section was the keen competition for the best jumper, which attracted entries from many parts of the South Island. It was won by Miss Joan Horne, of Gore. The championship for hunters went to H. E. Elworthy’s Nijinsky. In the saddle classes, D. Grant carried off the blue ribbon for the champion hack with Donarosa from a strong field. A good performance was put up by Mr C. S. Elms’s Adorina in the harness section. It won the championship and three first prizes. Prize List Awards were as follows, the number of entries in each class being given in parenthesis:— HORSES Trotting Horses (Judge: Mr F. Holmes.)
