STAND AT WILDING PARK

APPLICATION , FOR BUILDING PERMIT REFUSED

That it might not be possible to noia the New Zealand lawn tennis championships in Christchurch next January was disclosed by Mr J. Mercer at a meeting of the management committee oi the Canterbury Lawn Tennis Association last evening. The association had applied to the Building Controller 4n Wellington fox permission to reconstruct stand accommodation at Wilding Park, Mr Mercer said The Building Controller had advised the association to submit minimum requirements to the local building controller, who would grant the necessary authority for reconstruction The local controllei yesterday had refused the permit, said Mr Mercer, the only reason given being thj building regulations had been tightened A racing club in the Auckland district had been granted permission to reconstruct a stand ’•ecently Mr Mercer concluded.

The membei of Parliament tor the district (the Hon. D. G Sullivan) had expressed consternation at the state ol the stands, Mr F. H. G. Johnstone said Mr Sullivan was concerned he said, at the way the association had been treated over the matter A sub-committee comprising the chairman (Mr E. A. Lee) and Messrs Mercer and Johnstone was appointed to wait on Mr Sullivan to-day, in an endeavour to secure a satisfactory solution to the problem

D Brown) stated that the younger players under his guidance showed every promise He said that if a boy or girl was keen on tennis he or she should not play other summer sports. Commenting on the report. Mr G E. R. Atkinson said he did not consider that the association should spend money on boys who were going to play cricket. A coaching sub-committee comprising tyT :srs Lee, Atkinson, Mercer, and Cant was appointed to forward recommendations for coaching during the coming season. Advice was received from the New aiand Lawn Tennis Association that the dates December 25, 26, 27, and 28 had been approved for the Canterbury championships. Mr W A. Clothiex reported that 61 teams had been entered for competitions this season, compared with 49 last year and 45 in the 1944-45 season. Entry fees amounted to £ll3 against £BO

JUNIOR CHAMPIONSHIPS AT •HUTT VALLEY (P.A.) WELLINGTON-: October 31. The New Zealand junior tennis championships have ben allocated to the Hutt Valley Association, and will be nlayed from January 21 to 25 inclusive.

The Hawera Association has advised that it is unable to conduct the North Island chambionships, which will be aliped ted by the New Zealand Lawn Tennis Association at its next meeting. No applications for this tournament have yet been received.
