WOOL DUMP WEIGHTS

ORDER ISSUED FOR WATERFRONT RECOMMENDATIONS for LIMITATIONS (P.A.) WELLINGTON. Sept. 20. A statement on dumps of wool for loading into overseas vessels was issued by Mr Justice Ongley, chairman of the Waterfront Industry Commission, this evening. He says that, on August 29 last the commission met representatives of the Wool Disposal Commission, the New Zealand wool Board, the New Zealand Wool Brokers’ Association, the shipping companies, and the New Zealand Waterside Workers’ Union regarding an application by the union for a limitation in the weights of dumps of wool for loading to overseas vessels. "The commission has given very full and careful consideration to the evidence placed before it and has arrived at the following decision, which has been issued to-day by way of an order under the Waterfront Industry Emergency Regulations. 1946:—(1) The following conditions are to be observed in the loading of wool into overseas vessels: (a) single dumps are to be provided for ‘topping up’ and stowing in confined spaces, namely, alleyways and lockers, provided that double dumps shall be up-ended where reasonably practicable, but where lifting is required, or where the work is unduly arduous, single dumps are to be supplied: (b) all wool dumped from the date of this order, the weight of double dumps shall not exceed 6801 b; (c) all wool already dumped at the date of this order shall be loaded, provided the dumps do not exceed 8001 b weight, and provided further that single dumps shall be supplied for ‘topping up’ in accordance with clause 1 (a) above. "(2) Recommendation to the Standards Institute to fix a standard size and weave of woolpacks. “(3) Recommendation to the Agriculture Department to fix the maximum weight of single bales of wool at 4001 b. “The above decision comes into force as from October 1. 1946, and the Agriculture Department is arranging for publication in the next Gazette of a regulation fixing the maximum weight of single bales of wool at 4001 b. The commission requests the co-oneration of all sheenfarmers, wool brokers, shipping companies, and all other interested parties to assist in bringing the above conditions into operation.”
