GALLIMAUFRY TO BE SPELLED
L. J. Ellis sent Gallimaufry back to his owner, Mr L. Connelly, on Thursday for a spell. This Salmagundi gelding has lately had trouble with his off fore fetlock joint, and would not have, stood up to training on the hard tracks which can be expected later on. Since he commenced racing last May after a long spell to recover from an injured cannon bone, Gallimaufry has had only six starts. When he finished solidly to finish second to Joy Rosa in the Avonhead Hack Handicap on Grand National Day, after being badly placed with half a mile to run. Gallimaufry looked as if he might develop useful staying form among the hacks, and his defection at this stage is unfortunate. Trained Arctic King W. J. Wood, who was training at Treni tham before the war, and who won the New Zealand Cup with Arctic King, is settling there after several years’ service with the Merchant Navy, and hopes to set ■ up again as a trainer. Out of Hacks Brantome graduated from hack com- , pany with his two wins at the Avondale meeting. He has won £2540 from 11 starts on the flat and 10 over hurdles, his Avondale successes being the only ones he has scored on the flat. This over-sized Broiefort gelding ranks as a half-brother to « very good performer in Beau Leon. Brantome’s half-sister, Galilee, was brilliant as a two-year-old. Another half-brother. Night Fox, by Diacquenod, is the sire of a smart sprinter in Dymondy. Brilliant Mare’s First Foal Subdued, which was unbeaten in her five starts as a two-year-old, has produced a chestnut filly to the Nearco horse. Lord Bobs, and this season will be mated with Mr Currie’s latest importation, Timanova. Subdued is by Ringmaster from Submission, by Limond from Homage, by Absurd from Eulogy. Unable to Start The four-year-old mare which figures under the name of Sal Gundi in the Ohapi Stakes at the Geraldine Racing Club’s meeting to-day, will not be able to start, as the name has been disallowed by the New Zealand Racing Conference. It was only because of a misunderstanding regarding the approval of the name claimed that the mare was accepted for. £21,000 for French Three-year-old The Gaekwar of Baroda has bought France’s best three-year-old filly Pirette, to challenge the Derby and St. Leger winner Airborne in the. King George VI Stakes for three-year-olds at Ascot on October 12. The Gaekwar of Baroda is reported to have paid £21,000 for her.— London, September 19.
