Increase in Rents Predicted
“A perplexing feature affecting ownership of properties is the tremendous increase in local rates,” stated the report presented to the annual meeting in Christchurch of the Real Estate Institute (Canterbury and Westland branch). “The Hospital Board is faced with expenditure of more than £1,000,000;. the tramway and drainage boards both have heavy commitments, and there are the requirements of other local bodies,” the report continued. “This money has to be found by the ratepayer!, and a general increase in rents must result. At the moment there appears to be no other way of handling this steady increase, as all the local bodies are doing their best to keep down expenditure. But the money is required for essential services following the increase of industries and the development of the city-
