HIGH TREASON CHARGE
TRIAL OF MAJOR COUSENS
(Rec. 11.45 p.m.) SYDNEY, Sept It. Major Charles Cousens, who is charged with high treason, admitted to-day that two letters produced by the Grown might have been written by him. The Crown alleged that the letters accompanied presenta from Cousens to a Japanese, Miss Fouml Saisho, in Tokyo. Major Cousens admitted giving Saisho a handbag, violets, and American cigarettes. • Counsel said he did not want to sug§est that there was any impropriety In le relationship. Major Cousens admitted being cautiously friendly with several Japanese. He said that Saisho was not difficult to deceive when he Wished to pass out information. He had a constant battle of wits with her. The letters, which Major Cousens said were In typically polite Japanese style, were read to the Court.
