AMERICAN BASES OVERSEAS
NAVY MAY ABANDON SOME
TRUMAN’S BUDGET DIRECTIVE (NX. Press Association—Copyright) (Rec. 10.45 p.m.) WASHINGTON, Sept. 18. It is learned that the United States Navy Is contemplating the abandonment or reduction of 12 or more overseas bases, principally in the Pacific, as a result of Mr Truman’s directive cutting the naval budget The plan is subject to the approval of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and the State Department Among the bases which probably will be reduced are Majuro, Eniwetok, Truk, Noumea, and Manus. The “New York Herald-Tribune” says that international politics rather than economy are reported to be the reason underlying the action regarding Manus.
