With these and other proposed improvements, it was hoped in the near future to have a better and brighter Sumner.

“The outstanding characteristic- of our work this year has been the fight to supply juvenile labour,” said the district vocational guidance officer for girls (Miss C. Robinson) when speaking yesterday at the annual meeting of the Girls’ Advisory Committee of the Christchurch Vocational Guidance Centre. There was a very severe shortage of office workers, she said. In answer to a question, Miss Robinson said that the acute shortage of such workers was largely caused by the increasing number of marriages and by the return to their homGs of married women who had taken up employment during the war. Also, there had been, during the last three or four years, an increase in the number of pupils interested in the home science course in the secondary schools. There was now no need, as there had been in the past, to try to persuade girls to take this course. Miss Robinson added that the centre was still facing a very serious problem regarding the provision of suitable boarding accommodation for young workers.

The Christchurch Cultural Society, formerly the Society for Imperial Culture, was founded by Mrs Cluade Sawtell in 1921; and to celebrate its twentyfifth birthday, an anniversary meeting will be held at the end of this month. For this occasion, the first president, Professor J. Shelley, will come to Christchurch from Wellington and will deliver an address entitled “Hats and Hair-cuts.” A special musical programme has been arranged for the meeting and members will be permitted to invite interested friends to be present.

The number of, boys and girls interviewed by the officers of the Christchurch Vocational Guidance Centre during the last year was 9000; of these, 5175 were girls. These figures -were given yesterday by , the district vocational guidance officer for girls (Miss C. Robinson) at the annual meeting of the Girls’ Advisory Committee. Miss Robinson emphasised the need for more instruction being given to those about to leave school concerning the work they intended to do. A number of school pupils were completely ignorant about the type of work which they said they were going to take up. It was announced that primary school children in Form II would visit the centre next term to be interviewed regarding their secondary school course.

There were about 400 guests last night at the annual ball held by the Licensed Victuallers’ Association at the Winter Garden.
