DRIVER FINED £25
CAR WHICH MOUNTED TRAMWAY ZONE , (P.A.) AUCKLAND, August 20. The driver of a car which yesterday afternoon mounted a tramway safety zone in the city, knocking down three men, pleaded guilty in the Magistrate’s Court to-day to being intoxicated while in charge of the vehicle. He was Geoffrey Martin Goldsack, aged 23. His counsel said that Goldsack enlisted in the R.N.Z.A.F. when only 18, serving two years and a half in England, and flying fighter aeroplanes in about 100 raids. He also did four tours of duty in the Pacific in fighters, being discharged as a flight lieutenant. Counsel added that Goldsack’s nerves were in a bad state since his discharge. He arrived from Wellington only yesterday, and had a few drinks with a friend he had not met since the war. He was driving an old model car, which developed wheel-wobble and had defective brakes. When a truck in front stopped suddenly Goldsack turned to the right, and went over the safety zone. Mr L. J. H. Sinclair, S.M., said he would give due weight to Goldsack’s war service, and fine him £25. His licence would be cancelled, and he would not be able to obtain another for 18 months.
